Civically Dutiful

I am writing because of tomorrow's election. Ted Kennedy left metaphorically ginormous shoes to fill in the Senate, and us proud Massachusetts residents; born and raised or transplants, need to make sure the best candidate for the job is elected to that seat.

While I, as I am sure many of you are as well, am shocked that this is even a contest, I am sure that Coakley is the candidate for MA.

Coakley may not have been the most seasoned campaigner, but she has been a heavy hitter for Mass politics for quite some time. She would be one of the handful of women senators out of the total 100, and the first female senator of Massachusetts.

Here are my top reasons for choosing Coakley:
1. Health Care. Say what you will/won't about the reforms, Scott Brown would be the 41st vote against the bill (Coakley would remain the 60th for the bill). Meaning, we would get NO WHERE with improving health care for the thousands uninsured if he wins. And we've got a long way to go...

2. Environmental Issues. While he started out to be more of a friend of the environment, Scott Brown has shifted opinion and is now a global warming skeptic. He will not support Obama's national clean energy plan which promises green jobs, less dependence on oil, and a step towards a national fight against climate change. Martha Coakley has pledged her support of the clean energy plan and as an the Attorney Gen of MA filed suit and won against Bush admin policy with the EPA for not doing enough to fight global warming. Basically, Coakley and the other 12 attorneys general paved the way for the EPA's improved role as carbon dioxide regulators.

3. Decency. Um, Scott Brown: cosmo centerfold 1982? Not in my senate you don't. Lets think about this. If Martha Coakley was a once-centerfold, this would be a different story. Let's not let double standards take hold! No public exhibitionists in the senate, of any gender, THANK YOU!

So, VOTE tomorrow, according to your vision of America in the future. And don't let any touched-up photos fool you into thinking that the Senate will be sexually liberated or more progressive. Let past actions and upheld beliefs do the talking.

Upwards and onwards,
Rach

ps. here are some responses to the Cosmopolitan appearance of Scott Brown:
1. Scott Brown: putting the ass back into Massachusetts
2. Scott Brown: no nude left behind
3. Scott Brown: a hanging chad of a different variety
4. Scott Brown: joe six pack + a little extra
5. Scott Brown: change we can't believe in (he looked like that?)
6. Scott Brown: yes we can! (see you naked)
7. Scott Brown: whore.
